Sign a message with Ledger
Ledger Live has no built-in Bitcoin "Sign message" screen. Ledger's own support article proves ownership by connecting the Ledger to Electrum. For EVM, you sign when an app (exchange, MetaMask, Rabby) sends a personal_sign request to your Ledger.
Your keys never leave your wallet. Never paste your recovery words anywhere, including KeyProof. Signing a message is not a transaction.
Chains: Bitcoin, Ethereum and EVM chains
Signature format: Bitcoin: Electrum-style signatures (via Electrum or Sparrow). EVM: personal_sign (0x… 65-byte signature).
Bitcoin: sign with Electrum + Ledger[1]
Sparrow works the same way with a Ledger. See the Sparrow guide.
- Install Electrum and create a hardware-wallet wallet connected to your Ledger (open the Bitcoin app on the device).
- Go to Tools → Sign/Verify Message.
- Enter the exchange's message and select the exact Ledger Bitcoin address.
- Confirm the signing request on your Ledger, then copy the signature.
Tips
- Never type your 24 words into any computer, website or app to "verify" a wallet. A real ownership check only ever asks for a signature.
