Kraken: proving you own your self-custody wallet
Kraken offers one-click self-certification (with 2FA), a Satoshi test (EU/UK), or a digital signature through Reown/WalletConnect. You verify once per address, and the address is whitelisted after that.
When Kraken asks
Where: EU and UK (Travel Rule), Australia (AUSTRAC, since March 31, 2026)
Threshold: EU/UK: deposits and withdrawals over €1,000 to or from a private wallet. Australia: private-wallet deposits and withdrawals, and any new address that is not yet verified.
Accepted verification methods
| Method | Status | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Self-certification | Accepted | A one-click ownership confirmation with a 2FA check (EU/UK). In Australia it uses your Funding 2FA, which you are asked to set up if you have not.[1][4] |
| Satoshi test | Accepted | Send the exact amount shown, slightly above Kraken's minimum deposit, from the exact address to a unique Kraken verification address within 180 minutes. 2FA must be enabled.[1][2] |
| Digital signature (Reown / WalletConnect) | Accepted | Connect your wallet through Reown (formerly WalletConnect) and sign a unique, non-transactional message. Kraken says EVM wallets are supported. BTC and SOL signing works on the web app, not in the mobile apps.[3][4] |

Step by step
Satoshi test (EU/UK)[2]
- Make sure two-factor authentication (2FA) is enabled.
- When withdrawing to a private wallet, choose the Satoshi test option if it is shown. A 180-minute window starts.
- Note the unique Kraken verification address and the exact amount displayed.
- Send that exact amount from the private wallet address you are verifying. Tick "I've made the deposit" and click Next.
- If it succeeds, start a new withdrawal request to the same address. If it is pending, your withdrawal will not go through and your balance will not change until verification completes.
Digital signature[3]
- When prompted, pick your wallet provider (for example MetaMask or Trust Wallet) and connect through Reown (formerly WalletConnect).
- Sign the unique verification message Kraken generates. It does not move any crypto.
- If the signature is valid and matches the address you are verifying, you will see a confirmation.
- If the signed address does not match, you are asked to connect a different wallet or cancel.
- For BTC and SOL wallets on mobile, you are sent to the web version to finish.
Deposits flagged as coming from a private wallet (EU/UK)[1]
- Open the link in the email Kraken sends you to reach the verification page.
- Say whether the funds came from an "Exchange" or a "Private Wallet".
- For a private wallet, complete self-attestation or a Satoshi test. The deposit is released and the address is whitelisted.
Common errors and fixes
Satoshi test expired
You have 180 minutes. If the window passes, the address is not whitelisted. Start a new test and send right away.[2]
Verified, but my withdrawal did not go through
Kraken asks you to start a new withdrawal to the same address after verification succeeds.[1][2]
"Signed address doesn't match"
The wallet you connected signed with a different address. Switch to the account that holds the withdrawal address, or connect the correct wallet.[3]
Can't sign for BTC or SOL in the Kraken mobile app
Kraken says this is not yet supported in the mobile apps. Finish on the web app.[3]
Satoshi test or self-certification asks for 2FA I don't have
Turn on 2FA (Funding 2FA in Australia) first. Kraken requires it for these flows.[2][4]
A website offers to "generate" a signed message for Kraken
Kraken warns that fake message generators have been used to drain wallets. Sign only in your own wallet app, or through the flow inside Kraken.[5]
FAQ
Do I have to verify my Kraken withdrawal address every time?
No. Kraken says you verify once per wallet address. After that it is whitelisted.
What is the Kraken Satoshi test time limit?
180 minutes from when you start it.
Does Kraken support signing for Bitcoin wallets?
Kraken says digital signature verification supports EVM wallets, and BTC and SOL wallets need the web app instead of the mobile apps. Its separate signing article shows how to sign with a Trezor in Trezor Suite.
